Jagessar said he doesn’t remember a lot from those eight years, as he also had electroconvulsive therapy, which affected his memory. “I had never been delusional in my life before but I became so.” “Some of them had very drastic effects on me,” he said. He was hospitalized in Ottawa, and doctors tried several different medications to try and treat his depression. That eight-year stretch was one of the worst times of his life, Jagessar said. “The next eight years or so … I didn’t really touch it, except for little bits and pieces, here and there.” “I got sicker and I ended up in the hospital … and I ended up slacking off on the book,” he recalled. Jagessar started the book several years ago, but his mental illness started to severely impact his life. “I wrote the story that I wanted to entertain myself with.” “This book was my escape from it,” he said. Jagessar recently read from his book The Last Man from Earth, at the Greater Sudbury Public Library in northern Ontario. The lunchtime reading was held this week for participants in a writers' circle, which was formed by Sudbury's Northern Initiative for Social Action as a way to help people cope with mental illness.
